I am so excited to present the play in which I am starring...its such a big deal to me! It has helped to formalize my future in the theatre. I love theatre, and I love Acting even more, but this play has allowed to explore my options in the theatre much more than I ever did before. I am performing the same play in my native language, Spanish, and English. I have been so involved in this play, from rewriting the script from Spanish to English, learning the Cibaeño dialect from the Dominican Republic in Spanish, creating two equally integral and organic characters for each language, coming up with costumes for the characters, helping the Set Designer bring our set to life, Translating playbill from English to Spanish, and yes, learning those lines....This is all finally going to pay off this weekend when we finally open in English at 4pm (world premiere yes!) this Friday and continue on Saturday 2pm (English) 8pm (Spanish opening), Sunday 3pm (Spanish), Tuesday (English) and Thursday (Spanish) at 12pm. It's been a looooooong way but we have finally arrived!!! The most rewarding part for a performer is to have the audience appreciate their work, and mot importantly, the stories they are telling, because that's what makes theatre so vital in understanding the human experience.
Personally, this is a play that I can relate to personally, as an immigrant woman, as a latina, and as a daughter. To be able to step in my mother's shoes and feel her work, her age, her latina toughness at the face of adversity, and her unconditional love for her children. It has made appreciate her much more than I ever did before.
My character's name is Luz "Lucecita" Ortensia Cruz, a Dominican-American woman who med from D.R when she was young. The play starts when her son, Julio Cesar visits her in lieu of his father's death. Their worlds will unravel over the course of two acts and you will get to feel their pain and love for each other as we dig deeper into their feelings.
