A Doll's House Remix

If you know me well enough, you already know my preferred method of communication is writing and I love Theatre. Earlier this year I had the opportunity to re-write one of my favorite plays "A Doll's House" and adapt it to my own experiences through Heather Raffo's workshop "Places of Pilgrimage." Places of Pilgrimage offers an opportunity for Middle Eastern women to uplift their voices by developing their own personal narratives.

What does it mean to be a Middle Eastern woman today? The region is perhaps the most diverse in the world when it comes to ethnicity, language, religion, nationalities, diaspora and history and they are also often missed. As a Venezuelan-Lebanese living in the U.S I questioned how much of my own cultural background, given that I was raised in Venezuela and my native language is Spanish, I could bring to the table. All I can say now that the workshops have ended, is that I'm glad I went on this journey and joined women from Morocco, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, among others, with so much soul, love and healing words to share with the world. I will be forever grateful to Heather, Ron and the women I met in this workshop for the kindness, patience, trust and TEA! we all shared during each of these writing sessions. I cried with so much joy when I heard each story and when it was my turn, there was so much within myself I discovered. Like a book, my story has always been there, with its filled pages, waiting to be read. Although I didn't finish my own scene during the time of the workshops, I am so happy and proud to have these personal writings in my hands to continue discovering by myself. Thanks for daring me to express that other half of myself I love but never seem to show as much.
The creative end result of these writing sessions will be showcased tomorrow and titled "A Doll's House Remix." Our scenes will be performed by professional actors at the Kupferberg Arts Center in Queens College and it is FREE!! The readings will start at 7pm. If you want to come by and experience these amazing scenes please follow the link below to save your seat! I will be there too :)
