One of the coolest things that has happened to me ever was meeting Jose Antonio Vargas this week. I want to clarify its not only because he represents this super awesome human being who stands out in the crowd. Its because his own story shows how many other end up the same way. So many undocumented kids who have gone through primary and secondary education and then most of them through college only to realize after graduation that they really are not the same as everyone. So many of them who work so hard to shine above everyone else because they know its the only way they will make it here, its the only way they won't stay in the shadows, frustrated. To stand out is to dream. But it's also the hardest part of being us. Especially when we have a whole system against us.
Really. We shouldn't feel harassed or undermined but we can't help it when we have politicians deciding our lives in this country, when we have an administration that is trying to make everyone happy but instead makes it worse.
Jose Antonio Vargas is the living proof that immigration is not a latino issue and it affects us all citizens and non-citizens.
For young high school undocumented students who may be graduating this year and are facing the biggest questions of their life "what to do?" I hope they find Jose Antonio Vargas a great example that if you put your brains and heart into it you can succeed in this country. He said last night that coming out publicly as an undocumented student was the most liberating event of his life. and I have to agree form my own personal experience. which is why I'm not really afraid of people telling me to be careful because to me that's self-oppression and I'm not going to oppressed myself, its retarded, and I'm tired of doing it.
I know immigration is a very hot topic in America, and I know most people who will read this might not agree for different reasons but I want you to understand something from a logical point of view. If your country is inventing millions of dollars on educating children of undocumented immigrants, why won't the country want to get their money back, by offering these kids the opportunity to work and produce in the country who raised them? think about it. Most people who are against the Dream Act, don't even understand WHY they are against it. But when we stop to think about these issues we realize that there are so many angles to learn from. Broken Immigration System. Think about it. that's all I'm asking.
